Emergence of drug resistant flu: from AS posted in blog comments:

  • I study Flu infection in immune compromised hosts. This past flu season there were many persistent flu infections in transplant patients. These patients are being treated with immunospupressive drugs at the same time they are being treated with antivirals. This leads to prolonged shedding of the flu virus accompanied by selective pressure for anti-viral resistant strains to emerge. In the coming 09-10 flu season these patients will be especially vulnerable to H1N1 swine flu infection and will become perfect incubators for a resistant strain to emerge. It has already been documented that tamiflu resistant strains emerge under this prolonged selective pressure and can cause hospital outbreaks.
