The influenza A virus genome consists of 8 negative sense single strand RNA molecules.

The virus encodes 11 proteins.

  • PA
  • PB1and PB1-F2 (from an overlapping ORF, skipping 1st MET)
  • PB2
  • hemagglutinin (HA)
  • neuraminidase (NA)
  • nucleoprotein (NP)
  • M1 and M2 from splicing of segment 7 mRNA
  • NS1 and NS2(NEP) from splicing of segment 8 mRNA
