Director of Scientific Evaluation
Dr. Cumming has over 20 years of experience in biotechnology, including 10 years (1987-1997) with Genetics Institute, where he held a number of scientific and managerial positions working on protein and small molecule therapeutics in Product Development and Discovery Research. Among the various positions held, Dr. Cumming served as Project Leader of a Cell Adhesion program, a multi-million dollar project that eventually led to clinical evaluation of drug candidates. Dr. Cumming also chaired the Steering Committee for a tripartite corporate alliance (Genetics Institute, Wyeth, and Athena Neurosciences) on protein and small molecule therapeutics targeting various cell adhesion molecules for novel anti-inflammatory agents.
From 1999-2002 Dr. Cumming was Vice-President, Discovery Research at GlycoDesign Inc., identifying and developing small molecule inhibitors of human glycosidases and glycosyltransferases for the treatment of cancer, inflammation and infectious disease. Subsequently, Dr. Cumming co-founded Translational Medicines Inc. He served as CEO of this start-up focused upon developing therapeutics for cancer and inflammation by modulating the trafficking of immune and adult stem cells.
Dr. Cumming received his B.S. (summa cum laude) in Biochemistry from the College of Biological Sciences, University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University.
