Rajan N. Shah MSc, PhD

Director of Applied Chemistry

Dr. Shah has divided his career as a medicinal chemist between academia and the biotechnology industry. After graduating with a Doctorate in Chemistry from ATIRA, Gujarat University, Dr. Shah went to Purdue University, USA to pursue Post-Doctoral studies in both chemistry and industrial biotechnology.

From 1992 to 1994, Dr. Shah was Director of the Carbohydrate Laboratory at the University of Toronto, where he subsequently worked up to 2000 as an Assistant Professor (cross appointment) in the field of Carbohydrates, Department of Medical Genetics, University of Toronto. Dr. Shah was also a visiting scientist at the Harvard Medical Research Centre in 2004. As always interested in the applied aspects of chemistry to industrial biotechnology Dr. Shah has worked with a variety of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Shah was the Senior Research Officer at Maize Products Inc. in India from 1976-82 as well as chief consultant for High Polymer Co, another Indian corporation.

From 1993 to 2002, Dr. Shah was Vice-President, Medicinal Chemistry at GlycoDesign, a Toronto-based biotechnology company developing anti-cancer therapeutics. In 2003, Dr. Shah founded Translational Medicines, a small biotechnology company in USA. Dr. Shah is currently Director of Applied Chemistry for the International Consortium on Anti-Virals (ICAV) and Advisor to Dr. Michel Chretien on 'International Scientific Affairs' for ICAV network. He has received a variety of awards, both academic and applied, for his work in the field of chemistry.
